Seriously, I'm having a fucking blast. I also apparently don't know where the right side of my car is

It has always been fun!! It is just that 25 bucks an event is a bit steep otherwise I would be out there every week racing!

The group I'm doing it with is $20 and we get 10 runs. $2 a run? Yes please.
Unfortunately I'll be out of town for the next one...

It is usually 25 bucks and 6 to 8 runs. I usually go twice a month as that seems like a good amount of money to spend going in circles!

If you think thats fun wait till you do a trackday. It costs more, but 2hrs of track time > 10 mins on a cone course.

because it is an entry way drug. Next you will a set of bespoke tires and rims. Then yo will be booking at the tires that are at the edge of the rules. Then you will be one of those guys with a water bottle cooling the tires between runs.
After that you will start thinking about competing for the championship. The you will build a bespoke car, and you start looking at going to nationals. Drivers schools, car haulers...we were just looking out for you.

I already started thinking about tires....
I don't think I'll ever become very competitive beyond improving my times.

I wonder if I should set up something similar over here. As far as I can tell we haven't got any AutoX at all.
I'd love to give it a go :)

Surely there's SOMETHING like it.
It's good, cheap, safe fun. You never really get up to very high speed and the course is designed with safety in mind so there was never any point where I felt like I would get into a situation to harm my car or myself. And for $20 I can't think of something more fun.
It's also just great to see a group of people driving their cars properly, not just commuting to and from work but actually driving them for the pleasure and sport of driving.

Nearly. There's autograss, which is similar but in a field (looks like it would be harsh on my suspension and undercarriage), rallycross (same, and you need a race license) and autosolo (similar but with ludicrously tight courses, never get about 5mph and all about flicking the car around in handbrake turns).
I think space might be a problem. We don't really have the colossal car parks that abound in America, and if we do then they're attached to shopping malls and theme parks so are in use on the weekends.
I'm thinking disused airfields would be ideal though. There's tons of them littering the South coast left over from the war :)

We run on an old airfield, and you have tons of those.

AutoX is like crack. Go once, and your wallet will be drained within no time at all... but you'll have shiny new parts on your doorstep!

It is fun and so is rallycross, but there has to be at least 6 runs to make it worth the time, IMHO.
